Words Spoken Truly

... That's why I'm heavily in support of R1 only, because it assures me of the minimum in population growth. Outragous population growth is at the root of the problem here. Let's face it Tom, San Pedro will never be its own self contained society where people do not have to travel in order to live life. Hey wait a second....isn't that what they already say about Pedro folks! You have a dream Tom. That dream sounds nice but I just don't think it has any place in San Pedro. Fight to preserve what we have...it's a nice place as is, that's why people are clamoring to live here.

This comment has been sitting on my mind for the last few days because I didn't know quite what to make of it. In part of it the Anonymous commentor says I have a nice dream and I was rather flattered.

But then a few key phrases leapt out at me and I realized why the comment unsettled me. "...minimum in population growth..." and the last sentence "...Fight to preserve what we have...it's a nice place as is, that's why people are clamoring to live here..."

It hit me that Bob Bisno was exactly correct when he used the word "elitist". These phrases from the comment fit the exact definition of being an elitist. The R-1 gang wants a minimum of people to move in, and they want to fight to "preserve (i.e. keep others out) what they have". Of course they do not care about anyone else who is "clamoring to live here" because they are already set and don't care about the people who want to live closer to their jobs; whether they are at the Port (union laborers, by-the-way), or in other businesses around town, or teachers, or health-care workers (Kaiser is just around the corner and growing), etc., etc..

They just plain and simple don't want anyone else to come here. They say it over and over. Too bad, so sad, you should move to Wilmington if you can't afford the extremely limited housing in San Pedro.

Neither do they care that the real estate market in San Pedro is polarized in such a way that to buy anything that a working family could comfortably afford, they'd have to live in a rathole. The other of the market is either way beyond what anyone could afford, $1 million plus; or perhaps they could squeak by in qualifying for a mortgage on the typical 850 sq.ft. 2-bedroom, 1-bath, built in 1910 selling for $650,000++.

They do not care that Ponte Vista will have a broad range of housing options so that a more diverse population can call San Pedro home. But the R-1 gang isn't interested. They don't want anyone else here, but especially not a diverse population.

I guess this is what caused all the uproar last year when Bisno used the word "elitist". It simply hit too close to the mark.

Yes you're right Tom. All the elitists living in rat holes want to keep San Pedro from being diverse.

Over burdening Western Avenue is the voice you hear from R-1 supporters! You have failed to make your case that they are "elitists".

So I'm going to attempt to get back to the main topic - Ponte Vista.

It seems your opinion is that R-1 supporters are the most concerned with too much traffic on Western. Does this help focus the problem?

Okay Tom. That was my comment....the troll, baiter, nasty anonymous guy that you moderate all the time. I'm glad it caused you to think alittle. I'm no elitist. My point was that dense population growth is a PROBLEM. It's the root problem that will haunt us in terms of traffic, pollution, erosion of resources and quality of life in San Pedro. One way to control the growth and resulting damage to our community is to limit the housing. Simple Tommy. It figures you would take everything out of context and distort the truth. And San Pedro is a nice place to live...what's wrong with that? You want to ruin it? And yes people want to live here because it's nice. Keep it nice, and people will continue to want to live here.
The only elitists are people like BisNO and yourself. BisNO has imposed himself, and his money, on this community. We are begging him not to do this, and he just believes he knows what's better for our community. Who's the elitist?

Yo Tom,
You claim a typical 850sqft 2br 1ba house built in 1910 is selling for $650K+??? How about this. I own a 1150 sqft 2br 1ba house built in 1928 in a nice VDO section of San Pedro, and if you can get me over $650K, I will pay you a $50K commission. Deal?

Tom said...

Oh please! Enough with this already.

A. I sincerely doubt you would pay the commission anyway, but more importatntly;

B. Do I need to post all the 400 or so listings to prove my point? I have a better idea. Visit your local Realtor and get an education.

You need to wake up Tom. The pricing is not as extreme as you make it out to be. I'm watching the market quite closely since I'm looking to upgrade to a larger home soon. You are just flat out wrong.

Thanks for the pointer Anonymous 9:23am, but there is the fact the market for already-constructed homes is helping you. Prices are flattenning a bit.

But also, you are looking for only ONE livable home. What are the thousands of other families who want to move here supposed to do?

If thousands of other families want to move here, why are so many houses sitting on the market so long?

If ponte vista is for families, why does Bisno say there will be only 199 kids for 2300 units? I think you mentioned the answer before, ponte vista is not for working families, but "DINKs".

Tom said...

Is your question for real? Let's see, "Why is an over-priced rathole still on the market?" hmmm... Tough question. Let me think on it a while and get back to you.

I don't recall ever menitioning DINKs. Seems like you've got enough time on your hands to be looking up old comments from months and months ago, so why don't you find it and enlighten me?

You are wrong Tom. The housing market has been down for awhile. This is not just in San Pedro. This is all of socal. 18 monthes ago houses were selling as fast as people put them up for sale.

DINKS. You said it June 1. Took all of about 60 seconds to find it.

"Most like the place will be a vast majority of DINKs (Double Income No Kids). "

I think you would get more support for your ideas if you weren't so condescending towards everyone.

We live in ratholes that no one would want to live in. Thousands of supporters of R1 are a 'gang'. We are stupid. We want to be economically disadvantaged. We want to live in 1953.

When people read these statements, it becomes difficult to believe that the author really has our best interests in mind.
